That is exactly what happened to Gordon Brown earlier this year when he was about to give a speech at a conference in Scotland.
While freshening up just before his appearance on stage, the prime minister lost his lens down a plug hole.
Thankfully, staff at the hotel thought quickly and managed to rescue the lens from the pipe beneath the sink.
As Mr Brown is blind in one eye, having such visionary problems in his other could have led to disaster.
His case highlights one of the awkward issues regarding lenses - what happens when you lose them?
Orthokeratology could have come to the rescue of Mr Brown, as he would not have had to worry about his vision during the day.
As the ortho k lenses are worn at night, the prime minister would not have had to worry about his lost lens as he would have had natural vision before the speech.
