Smartphone users should consider ortho k contact lenses   |   30.09.2009

Many people now have smartphones, such as iPhones and Blackberries, but did you know they can be causing problems for your eyes.

Nancy Churnin, writing for the Dallas Morning News, has noted that many people are suffering from staring at the small screens for too long.

Dr Karen Bassichis Saland from the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas said that it can lead to problems such as dry eyes.

"When people stare at anything too long they forget to blink, which means they don't moisten their eyes," she told the publications.

"That leads to dry eye which, if unchecked, can impair vision. Dry eye can also cause eye strain."

For people who use daywear lenses, the problem of dry eyes is likely to be a familiar one.

Ortho k lenses can help avoid some of the issues often associated with wearing lenses in the day.

Worn at night they help to gently reshape the cornea while asleep and are taken out in the morning - as the eye is open to the air during waking hours there is less of a chance of suffering from the problems of dry eyes.
