Orthok lenses for sport  which are only worn at night whilst sleeping then removed next morning provide a non-surgical alternative to laser treatment. And for one of the world's leading sportsmen, this could have been the perfect solution but it appears that no-one told him about orthok. Rory McIllroy, the number 3-ranked golfer in the world has struggled with eyesight problems for over 10 years and used both glasses and conventional daytime contact lenses to correct his vision but has now opted for laser surgery. He told the BBC: "I woke up and it was like a whole new world, it's incredible. I think it should hopefully improve me on the golf course and make everything a little bit sharper"

Many leading professional golfers opt for laser treatment given the importance of having sharp distance vision to be able to focus clearly on shots from both tee box and fairway. And weather factors such as wind and rain or even just high pollen levels can cause major difficulties for golfers who have worn glasses or conventional daytime contact lenses like Rory. Indeed, top golfers such as Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington have had laser surgery several times as they search for an extra ‘edge' to their game which they believe the treatment can provide. However, orthok lenses for sport  offer the same benefit of perfect natural daytime vision without surgery and, unlike laser correction, it is a fully reversible treatment.

This revolutionary new treatment is based on the long established optical science of orthokeratology whose principles were understood by the Chinese more than one thousand years ago. The custom-designed lenses are unique to each person's prescription and when inserted at night gently flatten the surface of the eyes under the mild pressure of closed eyelids during sleep. This flattening means that when the lenses are removed each morning, light entering the eyes focuses directly on the retina at the back of the eye rather than in front of it so that distant objects can be seen clearly. The effect lasts for over 24 hours so vision remains sharp until the orthok lenses for sport  are reinserted at night before going to bed.
