Manchester United and Arsenal fans have watched the world's first live 3D sports broadcast through special glasses.

Football fans crowded into nine pubs across the UK to watch the match at the Emirates Stadium in north London, filmed by Sky Sports.

The commentary, camera shots and editing used were separate from the normal Sky Sports coverage, with former Arsenal striker Alan Smith and commentator Alan Parry talking viewers through the action.

As the match kicked off, Parry said: "It's a moment of television history. You'll see every shot, every tackle and every save in a way you've never seen before. I'm sure it will revolutionise the way we watch live sports."

The broadcast has come just weeks after the release of Avatar, a pioneering 3D film, and Sky Sports even visited director James Cameron to help develop its 3D system which it has been working on for two years.

Sky has promised to show more 3D games this spring as more 3D television sets become available and also offer the service to Sky+HD customers.
