Canadian doctor urges regular eye tests   |   14.10.2009

An optometrist is encouraging older people to make sure they get their eyes checked regularly.

Dr Todd Wilbee, writing for Canadian publication The Windsor Star, highlighted a number of issues that effect people aged 40 and over.

Presbyopia, epiphora (excessive tearing) and trichiasis (eyelashes scratching the eyball) are among the conditions he noted.

Writing for the newspaper, Dr Wilbee said: "Early detection is critical [to limit] the amount of vision loss.

"Optometrists are highly trained professionals educated to diagnose and treat eye diseases and visual problems."

Many people may be nervous about trips to the opticians, especially when they are younger and may not want to wear glasses.

Ortho k lenses provide a great alternative - worn at night they help to gently reshape the cornea and once awoken, the wearer can take them out and forget about their vision for the rest of the day.

Recent research found that the wearing of ortho k lenses helped slow down the onset of shortsightedness in children, so it is well worth looking into as an alternative to glasses and eye laser surgery.
