Right to Sight day on October 8th   |   02.10.2009

Coming up on October 8th is an event that aims to help eliminate avoidable blindness across the world.

Vision 2020: The Right to Sight, is a joint programme by a number of bodies including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.

A number of events have taken place to help raise funds for the initiative.

Last month, consultant ophthalmic surgeon Dr Rosie Brennan and some of her colleagues took part in a cycle ride across Ireland to raise cash for an African eye hospital.

Dr Brennan and her team covered 80 miles daily over a period of five days.

Vision 2020 hopes to eliminate avoidable blindness by 2020 through a number of initiatives including the development of national eye care programmes.

In addition, it hopes to help people who have unavoidable vision problems maximise their potential.

According to the WHO, 45 million people worldwide suffer from complete blindness, while 269 million have to deal with low vision.
