LASIK surgery to be investigated by US government   |   16.10.2009
Eye laser surgery is to be the focus of a new study by the National Eye Institute and two US government departments.

The study, which will survey the quality of life experienced after the surgery, is to be done in three stages, the first of which began in July 2009.

Dr Jeffery Shuren, acting director of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said that the study would "enhance … understanding of the risks of LASIK".

He added: "Reporting adverse events to the FDA is critical to better understand the safety and effectiveness of ophthalmic lasers used in LASIK procedures to take appropriate actions where the lasers do not meet safety and effectiveness standards."

For many, the thought of invasive eye laser surgery may be scary, but there is another way to get natural vision.

Ortho k lenses are an excellent alternative to eye laser surgery.

Worn at night, the specially constructed lenses help to gently reshape the cornea while sleeping, meaning that once awake there is no need for any lenses or glasses.

If you are worried about the effects of LASIK surgery, ortho k lenses could be for you.
