Ancient China could have inspired ortho k lenses
Short sightedness is a problem that affects a large amount of people and an article in the Daily Mail in 2008 noted that ortho k could help.

Susan Blakeney, an optometric adviser to the College of Optometrists, highlighted that the technique had possibly been used by the Chinese centuries ago by the placing of weights on the eyes while asleep to shape the cornea.

"But until recently it has been considered unreliable, as there was never any guarantee the lenses would work," she said.

Now, however, the situation is different thanks to "techniques such as corneal topography," she said.

"This means lenses can be made to fit the curve of each person's eye very accurately."
