US baseball star Curtis Granderson has been struggling on the field of late.

The Major League Baseball centre fielder has recently been diagnosed with 20/30 vision following his trade for the Yankees earlier in the season.

Granderson has said he is now wearing contact lenses for the first time in his career.

Speaking to the Daily News, Granderson said: "They said, 'Your vision is 20/30, so let's see if we can improve it'."

"For most people, they'd let it go, but since [they] can possibly make me see better to hit, who knows. We'll see," he added.

However, the sportsman said that it was difficult to tell whether the new contact lenses had improved his game.

"I've been wearing them for a while, just seeing what could possibly happen with that whole thing," Granderson said.

"I'll just kind of get used to them, see what's going on. Worst-case scenario, I'll just take them off," he concluded.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told the news provider that all the team's athletes are expected to undergo regular health examinations, including eye exams.

"Who knows if any of that was a problem or not, but he's trying out the contacts," Cashman concluded.

A possible alternative to wearing contact lenses on the field could be to use Ortho K over night lenses.

Granderson may find that his contact lenses move or fall out, and wearing overnight correction lenses would allow him to forego wearing lenses during games.

Ortho K lenses are also good for sportspeople as they avoid the need for potentially risky laser eye surgery, which if carried out incorrectly can end an athlete's career.

Most competitive athletes wait until their career is over before considering laser eye surgery as some of the side effects of the procedure can be irreversible.
