Overnight vision correction  where small custom-designed contact lenses are worn only at night while sleeping offers a new way of treating eyesight problems for the over 40's who are often slow to get their vision checked as they get older. Age-related conditions such as presbyopia where near vision tasks such as reading become progressively more difficult begin to become evident once people pass the age of 40. In combination with an existing vision problem such as short-sightedness, this can mean that an older person's eyesight becomes too poor to be able to drive safely and statistics recently highlighted by the Co-Operative Motor Group underline that this is a growing problem.

The number of drivers who have lost their driving licence due to failing eyesight has more than doubled in the last four years, with those whose licence was revoked increasing from a total of 1,597 in 2006 to over 4,000 in 2010 based on figures following a freedom of information request.
Co-Operative Group Managing Director Tony Guest said: "Good eyesight is essential to safe motoring, and we would urge anybody who has concerns over their vision to contact a specialist." Often older drivers do not like to admit their vision is worsening since it may require them to wear glasses for the first time. This is where overnight vision correction  offers a great new treatment option.

The new overnight lenses gently flatten the surface of the eye during sleep to correct any short-sightedness and by displacing cells from the centre of the eye to the periphery they create what opticians call a ‘plus effect' which improves reading vision. After the lenses are removed each morning, the wearer has perfect natural vision all day long until the lenses are reinserted at night. So for the over 40's, overnight vision correction  can treat both their short-sightedness and their presbyopia, leaving them glasses-free all day and, most importantly, safe to drive. Any driver with eyesight concerns should see an optician as soon as possible. As Guest says: "There is no room for complacency when it comes to road safety."
