Simple eye test helps spot brain tumour
A woman's life has been saved after a simple eye test resulted in an MRI scan being conducted that spotted a potentially lethal brain tumour.

The lucky escape for Sue Appleby-Turner, a 36-year-old from Scarborough, highlights one of the many benefits of undergoing regular eye examinations.

Appleby-Turner approached her local optometrist after suffering from headaches which did not respond to traditional treatment, reports the Scarborough Evening News.

When she failed both her central and peripheral vision examinations, she was immediately referred to an eye specialist at Hull Royal Infirmary.

After a quick MRI scan, healthcare professionals discovered a large tumour, which was putting pressure on her brain and causing a build-up of fluid.

She told the news provider: "This turned my world upside down - I never expected to be referred for an MRI scan following a trip to the opticians. To be told you have a brain tumour is the most frightening experience."

"I'd never suffered from loss of vision or poor eyesight, but research suggested you should have an eye test every two years. I hadn't had one for nearly ten years so I thought it was worth a visit," she said.

Adding: "When a second optician was brought into the room I anticipated the worst, but they reassured me every step of the way."

Appleby-Turner underwent two emergency surgeries to drain the fluid on her brand and remove the tumour.

Other conditions that can easily be spotted with a simple eye test include myopia, macular degeneration and cataracts.

When it comes to vision correction techniques for myopic patients, Ortho K overnight corrective contact lenses are an excellent solution as they have many of the benefits of corrective laser surgery, without any of the permanent side-effects associated with the invasive technique.
